Dera head arrested for fraud
A woman, who was heading a dera in Sohal Khalsa village in the district, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly duping a person with false promise of sending him abroad, police said.
Jaswinder Kaur, popularly known in the area as "Baba", was arrested on the complaint of Kamaljit Singh who alleged that he had been cheated to the tune Rs 16 lakh by her on the pretext of helping him go abroad.
While the investigation against her was already on, Kaur "concocted" a story of a dacoity at her dera, alleging that Rs 29.30 lakh were looted from her by four persons including a girl Rajwant Kaur, police said.
During investigation, it came to light that the family of Rajwant was allegedly cheated to the tune of Rs 8 lakh by the "Baba" with the promise of getting her married to an NRI boy, who later turned out to be a local married man, they said.
When Rajwant demanded her money back, Jaswainder tried to implicate her in a dacoity case, they said.
